About us

Mostyn Street Clinic is a general practice located in the regional Victorian township of Castlemaine, approximately 95 kilometres north of Melbourne.  The clinic serves the Mount Alexander Shire which has a population of approximately 18,000 residents.

Mostyn St clinic is the oldest established medical clinic in Castlemaine and has been providing medical care to local people for over 100 years. The premises were originally an Italianate mansion built by the Fitzgerald family in 1862. The Fitzgeralds founded the Castlemaine XXXX brewery. It 1901 it became a hospital under the direction of Dr Arthur Machen Hill and was named “Ballara”. During the 1920’s Ballara was notable for delivering up to 8 babies per week . It continued to function as a Doctor’s surgery and hospital until 1941.

Since then the Mostyn St Clinic has continued to serve the community as a busy general medical practice,

Mostyn Street Clinic doctors have special interests including anaesthetics, women’s health, obstetrics and shared antenatal care, child and adolescent health, chronic disease management and palliative care. Please see our full list of services provided.

The Mostyn Street Clinic is dedicated to teaching young doctors. We have registrars training to be GPs.

Castlemaine Hospital has a GP-staffed urgent care centre, acute and rehabilitation wards and also provides out-patient rehabilitation.  There is a full range of specialists available in Bendigo as well as visiting specialists who consult in Castlemaine.
